What Pot Shot does

Click the Pot Shot taskbar icon to capture the screen under your mouse. The screenshot is copied to your clipboard, ready to paste and share.

  • PNG is the default, most compatible format.
  • PNG + WebP offers a smaller lossless WebP file for applications that accept files, with a PNG fallback.
  • Keep screenshots on the clipboard only, or also save a copy in your Windows Screenshots folder.
  • A delayed shot gives you 4 seconds by default, or 10 seconds in Settings, to open a menu or get ready. It captures the screen under your mouse when the countdown ends.

Download and set up

  1. Download Pot Shot and unzip it somewhere you want to keep it.
  2. Keep all the extracted files together. PotShot.exe needs the accompanying files beside it.
  3. Pin PotShot.exe to your Windows taskbar.

Right-click the taskbar icon and select Settings to choose the format, saving behaviour and delayed-shot time. You can also Shift-click to open Settings.

Clipboard and timing

PNG capture is ready first. In PNG + WebP mode, WebP conversion normally takes about a second and can take longer on large screens. Wait briefly before pasting if you want the WebP file.

Different applications read the clipboard differently. Every format is not guaranteed to be available on the first read, and some applications may need a second paste attempt. If WebP conversion fails, the PNG remains available.

The delayed-shot countdown starts when you select Delayed shot from the taskbar menu. Only one delayed shot can run at a time. After pinning or moving the icon, click it once so Pot Shot can learn its position.

Good to know

Pot Shot makes no network connections and has no telemetry, installer or automatic updater.

PNG + WebP creates temporary screenshot files even in clipboard-only mode. Cleanup runs when Pot Shot runs: it deletes its own files older than 24 hours but always retains the 10 most recent. Saved screenshots are not deleted by this cleanup.

Windows clipboard history, clipboard sync or a synced Screenshots folder may retain or sync screenshots if you have enabled those features.
